well. today there was an earthquake. i guess it's fairly normal. but that's the first real one i have ever been awake for. i'm not going to lie, it was a little exciting.
it lasted about 7 or 8 seconds. the building shook quite a bit. nothing major - and certainly nothing worth this much talking - but still. it was a first for me.
proof i didn't imagine it:
Quake in Macedonia, no damage or injuries reported
SKOPJE, Macedonia: Authorities say a moderately strong earthquake with preliminary magnitude 5 has shaken Macedonia, but no injuries or damage have been reported.
The Seismological Institute says the quake occurred at 1:04 p.m. (1204GMT), near the town of Gostivar some 40 miles (60 kilometers) west of the capital Skopje.
Thursday's earthquake was felt in Skopje and across western Macedonia.
in other news:
the 7th was christmas here.
so the night of the fifth everyone has bonfires and plays extra loud music. and as always, there are fireworks.
then the morning of the sixth kids come by your door starting at 6 in the AM. they sing and expect candy or fruit or whatever. strangely one of the songs smacks of the the tune to trick-or-treat smell me feet...
then everyone hangs a bunch of dead dried up brown leaves on there doors. these will remain there until they crumble off voluntarily.
i don't really know what happens on the seventh, i assumed everything would be closed so i didn't get out in the nasty weather. but the news showed a ton of people in the churches, lighting candles for the dead, and the priests were extra gaudy in their finery.
next week is old new year. yes. that's right. another holiday. one called old new year.
it celebrates the new year according to the julian calendar. so you guessed it, more fireworks are due. apparently it's not big enough to close businesses, but it is still a recognized holiday.
i mean no offense - but i think the balkan people are just looking for more reasons to party and... have fireworks.
hey! it's tuesday! let's shoot fireworks!
hey! i saw a stray dog! let's shoot fireworks!
hey i have ten toes! let's shoot fireworks!
